The new modular building is now connected to the 1971 school by an enclosed walkway, allowing students and faculty to move between spaces without going outside—no matter the weather. This functional space will be ready for the start of the school year and will serve students and staff while the older 1919 and 1949 school buildings are taken down to make way for a brand-new facility.
The City of Quincy and the Quincy Public Schools are pleased to announce the opening of the temporary Squantum School, completed over the summer and ready to welcome students for the start of the new school year. The temporary school will serve as the home for Squantum’s students and staff over the next two years while construction of the new Squantum Elementary School takes place. Over the past several months, the facility has been fully prepared with significant upgrades and improvements to provide a safe and supportive learning environment. With the opening of the temporary school building, the construction team’s next major task will be the removal of the 1949 and 1919 school buildings to make way for the new facility. Over the summer, all hazardous materials were safely removed in preparation for demolition.
Utility infrastructure work on the surrounding streets has been completed, and construction activity will now shift inside the site limits while school is in session. The temporary school’s main entrance will be located on Standish Avenue, while Mayflower Road will serve as the construction entrance for project vehicles.
Foundation work for the new school is expected to begin in October, with structural steel installation scheduled to follow in early 2026.

The project team will strive to maintain a safe working environment for students throughout the project. The new design is considering ways to minimize the impact to the surrounding community during the phases of construction as well as post construction. A portion of the existing Squantum School will remain operational throughout the project and will be supplemented with temporary modular classrooms. The adjacent parkland will only be temporarily used during construction and will be restored when the project is complete.
The school will be designed to compliment the Squantum neighborhood by scaling to be appropriate for the residential neighborhood and to reflect the values of the seaside community.
The project is currently in the Construction Document phase, where the design is refined to a more detailed level. This follows the Design Development phase, during which the project team translated the Schematic Design into more detailed design drawings. In this phase, drawings are further developed to provide a clearer understanding of the building's design. The goal of this phase is to put together a program for a fully detailed set for construction.
